About Windsurf
Windsurf is an AI-native code editor built around Cascade, an agentic system that reads your entire codebase, edits across multiple files simultaneously, runs terminal commands, and remembers your coding style as it works. Unlike tools that bolt a chat window onto a conventional editor, Cascade merges planning, explanation, and execution into a single flow. It is built on VS Code foundations, so your existing extensions, keybindings, and themes carry over. The learning curve is low if you are already a VS Code user, and the upgrade in capability is significant. Ranked number one in LogRocket's AI Dev Tool Power Rankings as of February 2026, it had reached $82 million in ARR before being acquired by Cognition AI for roughly $250 million in December 2025. Windsurf 2.0 (launched recently) introduces local and cloud agents working in tandem, allowing background development tasks to run while you stay in flow on other work. Cascade handles refactors across dozens of files, interprets vague instructions into concrete changes, and maintains context across long sessions in ways that simpler autocomplete tools cannot match. The free plan offers unlimited completions but caps agentic credits at 25 per month, which runs out quickly on any serious session. Pro is $20/month with 500 credits and SOC 2 compliance. The Max plan at $200/month is aimed at heavy users and includes Devin Cloud sessions for background development work. Teams pricing is $40 per user per month. One thing worth knowing: the free tier does not include SOC 2 compliance, so avoid pasting proprietary or client code until you are on a paid plan. The Cognition acquisition also raises open questions about pricing and product direction over the next year or two, though the product itself has continued shipping. Where it falls short: it is designed for individual developers more than collaborative teams, stability under heavy use still lags slightly behind Cursor, and the credit model means power users can burn through limits faster than expected.
